Fell and Guides Races

The natural landscape provides a home for both Fell and Guides races.

Fell Race

Our prestigious nine mile fell race follows the course around one of Lakeland’s best known walks known as the Fairfield Horseshoe  and unsurprisingly is known as the Rydal Round. You have to be a pretty serious walker to even consider walking this magnificent route, never mind running it!  Also it is our first event of the day.

Men and women run together in this event but there are plenty of subdivisions. The first 5 men and the first 5 ladies all receive prizes as do the first team of 3. For the veterans, the first 3 men and 3 ladies in both the over 40 and the over 50 categories all receive prizes.

Guides Races

Are more easily viewed by spectators as they follow a direct course up and down the fell side. The name Guide stems from the 18th century when visitors seeking to exercise used the knowledge and skill of the local fellsmen to guide them over the mountain areas. In their spare time the guides had competitions among themselves racing to the top of the nearest fell and back.

The Senior guide race:  Again there are male and female competitors with the first five males and the first five females all receiving a cut of the prize money.

Junior Guides Races:

Under 17’s for both boys and girls

Under 14’s for both boys and girls

Under 14’s for both boys and girls

Under 12’s for both boys and girls

Under 9’s for both boys and girls

FRA rules apply to the Rydal Round and BOFRA rules apply to all Guides races
